Since its development in the 1920s, Snell Isle has been considered one of the most celebrated and enviable addresses throughout all of Tampa Bay. Snell Isle boasts a rich history, beginning in 1911 when developer C. Perry Snell first purchased a 40 acre tract of muddy sand and mangroves along Coffee Pot Bayou. In 1924, he set forth to begin developing a community in which he said the “location and beauty will attract people from many states and add fame to our already famous city,” and with that Snell Isle was born. In 1925, Snell began selling waterfront lots and soon lavish and ornate Mediterranean Revival-style villas began popping up for the wealthy elite. With his vast earnings from the Snell Isle land sales, Snell and his wife traveled to Europe. Snell brought back with him over $1 million dollars’ worth of statues, tiles and ornaments to adorn his properties and the tree lined streets of Snell Isle, some of which are still visible today.
On December 25, 1927, C. Perry Snell opened the Snell Isle Golf Club, comprised of an 18-hole course and a lavish Moorish inspired clubhouse situated at the end of Snell Isle Boulevard. Today, the clubhouse still stands and now is home to the championship Vinoy Golf Course and Country Club. The clubhouse is considered the most treasured landmark on Snell Isle. The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club features a challenging 18-hole, par 72 course, clubhouse, pool, event facilities, and a casual dining restaurant that is a favorite of Snell Isle residents.
Snell Isle also is home to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club’s Snell Isle Marina, which boasts deep water slips, direct access out to Tampa Bay, a fueling station, and a fully equipped ship’s store. Another prominent Snell Isle landmark is the St. Petersburg Women’s Club, built in 1929 by C. Perry Snell as a civic gift to the community. The St. Petersburg Women’s Club still greets everyone today as they enter Snell Isle and serves as important center for meetings, events and weddings.
